💌Dear Sarah

Dear Sarah,

I recently discovered that my niece has been cutting herself. It is superficial but still worrisome for our family. Is every child who is cutting themselves attempting suicide?

Sincerely,

An Observing Aunt

Dear Observing Aunt, The short answer is no. Sadly, there is an epidemic in this younger generation that has been spreading around school-aged children and teens as a way to “feel better.” Causing pain to yourself can release a chemical reaction in your brain from an endorphin high. An endorphin response in your brain feels euphoric resembling the effects of a pain killer. The adolescent population has been sharing this information as a way to help someone feel better when another is

feeling sad, traumatized, anxious, or angry. The long answer is that a person who is cutting for the euphoric high of endorphins is doing so to “feel something” different than what they have been feeling that they don’t like. If a person was actually suicidal the actions would be more drastic such as deeper cuts where medical attention is needed, overdosing on substances, asphyxiation of some sort, or a deliberate tragedy. Superficial cutting is a need to feel something else and these cuts are typically on a person’s thighs, wrists, or belly.

The real issue is not the cutting, which has turned into an addictive behavior. Once a person has figured out that superficial cutting makes them feel good, just like substance use, it becomes an addiction and is no longer about feeling good but getting their next fix. As is with substance abuse, a therapist would address this type of issue with a form of addictions counseling. Addictions are considered maladaptive behaviors for root problems. Your niece would benefit from seeing a therapist for addictions counseling while congruently identifying the original reason for beginning the maladaptive behavior. While working on processing the original issue, a therapist can help your niece figure out adaptive behaviors to gradually replace the maladaptive one. Some techniques that have worked in the past are rubberband snapping on a wrist when feeling the urge to cut or my favorite, giving her a box of fine tipped sharpies to draw henna art on her cutting area when feeling the urge.

I know some would argue with me about the rubberband snapping, identifying it as a cause of pain as well but I would challenge them with it being the lesser of two evils and doesn’t leave scars. It is a temporary solution while the main issues are being processed. Others might have issues with permanent marker drawings on her body. Your niece would be making something beautiful out of her pain, causing a positive cognitive thought process and decreasing her negative thoughts. Both are temporary solutions while her therapist helps her process her root cause. In summary, encourage the use of suggested alternatives and communicating with a therapist.

📣The Collective Buzz

🌟From the Founder: Growing Together

She Rises Collective continues to grow, one incredible woman at a time. Since opening our doors, we've been encouraged by the enthusiasm, support, and sense of community that each new member brings. Our goal is to welcome 25 members by the end of the year, creating a diverse network of women-owned businesses that uplift, encourage, and empower one another. While 25 is an exciting milestone, it's only the beginning. We look forward to continuing to grow and expanding our impact throughout our community in the years ahead.

This month also gives us an opportunity to put our mission into action. On August 22, we'll be volunteering with Crossroads for Women as we deliver the personal care and feminine hygiene items collected during our community drive. This outreach is more than a donation—it reflects the compassion, generosity, and strength of the women in our community. Together, we're proving that when women come together with a shared purpose, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

We're also looking forward to a special milestone—our first all-member meeting! This gathering will be a chance to meet fellow members, build new relationships, share ideas, and celebrate everything we've accomplished together so far. Whether you're one of our founding members or have just joined, we're excited to continue building a supportive community where omen connect, collaborate, and rise together.

💰Money Matters

It may feel too early to think about Christmas, but starting now is one of the easiest ways to reduce holiday stress. Instead of relying on credit cards in December, try setting aside a little each week. Even small amounts can make a big difference.

Here are a few simple ideas:

  • Set a holiday budget now. Decide how much you want to spend on gifts, food, travel, and decorations before the season begins.

  • Save a little each week. Saving just $25 a week from now until Christmas gives you several hundred dollars to work with when the holidays arrive.

  • Open a dedicated Christmas fund. Keeping holiday savings separate from your everyday spending makes it easier to stay on track.

  • Take advantage of sales. When you find a meaningful gift at a great price, purchase it early instead of waiting until December.

  • Remember what matters most. Thoughtful gifts, quality time, and meaningful experiences often leave a bigger impression than expensive presents.

Planning ahead isn't about spending more—it's about spending wisely. A little preparation today can help you enjoy the holidays without the financial hangover in January.

Here's to making this Christmas a season of joy instead of stress.

☀️Rise & Shine

A Year of Taking the Leap

This year has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my journey. After seven years as a Realtor, I proudly opened my own brokerage, Selling Enchantment, with a vision of providing exceptional service while building lasting relationships within our community. At the same time, I brought another dream to life by founding She Rises Collective—an organization created to connect, support, and empower women-owned businesses through collaboration, networking, and community outreach.

Starting not one, but two organizations in the same year has come with its share of challenges, but every late night and every leap of faith has been worth it. Watching women come together to encourage one another, share opportunities, and give back to our community has reminded me why I started this journey in the first place.

My hope is that She Rises Collective becomes more than a networking group—it becomes a place where women find genuine friendships, trusted referrals, and the confidence to pursue their dreams. As we continue to grow together, I'm excited for what lies ahead and grateful to everyone who has believed in this vision from the very beginning.

Here's to new beginnings, bold dreams, and proving that when women support women, incredible things happen. ☀️

📝Quote of the Month

🏡She Holds the Keys

To Stage or Not to Stage?

One of the most common questions sellers ask is, "Do I really need to stage my home?" The answer depends on the property, but in many cases, thoughtful staging can make a big difference. Staging isn't about making your home look expensive—it's about helping buyers picture themselves living there. A bright, clean, and uncluttered home often feels larger, more welcoming, and move-in ready If your home is already beautifully furnished, a few simple updates like fresh flowers, neutral décor, and removing personal items may be all you need. Vacant homes, however, can benefit greatly from staging, as empty rooms often appear smaller and make it harder for buyers to visualize the space.

Quick Staging Tips

Declutter countertops and shelves.

• Let in natural light by opening blinds and curtains.

• Add fresh towels and simple décor to bathrooms.

• Use neutral colors and minimal decorations.

• Boost curb appeal with fresh mulch or potted flowers.

💡Jasmine's Advice

You don't always need to fully stage a home to make a great impression. Sometimes a few strategic changes are all it takes to help buyers fall in love. Every home is unique, which is why I create a customized marketing plan for each listing to highlight its best features and maximize its appeal.

"The goal isn't to decorate your home—it's to help buyers imagine it as theirs."

Why we recommend it: One of the biggest challenges women face in business is worrying about what others think. The Let Them Theory encourages readers to stop trying to control other people’s opinions and instead focus on what they can control-their own actions, mindset, and goals.

Takeaway: Let people doubt you. Let people misunderstand you. Keep building away.

Perfect for: Entrepreneurs, leaders, and women learning to protect their peace while growing personally and professionally.

🤝 Let's Connect

The heart of She Rises Collective is connection. Every introduction, referral, collaboration, and conversation helps strengthen our community of women entrepreneurs. Take a moment this month to reach out to another member, attend an event, or support a fellow business owner. Together, we rise higher than we ever could alone.

Back-to-School Doesn't Have to Mean Back-to-Burnout

As summer winds down and backpacks come back out, many women find themselves shifting into what I call "survival mode."

Calendars fill up overnight. School supplies, sports schedules, work deadlines, meal planning, appointments, and family commitments all competefor your attention. Before long, you're making sure everyone else is prepared while quietly putting your own needs on hold.

Sound familiar?

The back-to-school season is one of the busiest times of the year, but it doesn't have to become the season where your health takes a back seat.

One thing I've learned after years of coaching women is this: your wellness doesn't disappear because life gets busy, it becomes even more important.

When we're under chronic stress, our bodies often respond by increasing cravings, disrupting sleep, lowering energy, and making it feel harder to stay consistent with healthy habits. Instead of blaming yourself for "falling off track," recognize that your body is responding to the demands being placed on it.

Rather than striving for perfection, focus on consistency with a few simple habits that anchor your day.

Start with protein at breakfast to support steady energy and help curb afternoon cravings. Keep a water bottle nearby and sip throughout the day. Schedule movement like you would any other important appointment, even if it's just a 20-minute walk or strength workout. And perhaps most importantly, give yourself permission to slow down for a few minutes each day. A quiet cup of coffee before the house wakes up, a few deep breaths between meetings, or a short evening walk can do more for your nervous system than you might realize.

Remember, your children are watching how you care for yourself. When they see you fueling your body, moving with purpose, managing stress in healthy ways, and valuing your own well-being, you're teaching lessons they'll carry long after they've left home.

This school year, I encourage you to make one promise to yourself: don't wait until life settles down to prioritize your health. Life will always be busy, but your energy, your strength, and your well-being deserve a place on the calendar too.

Here's to a school year filled not just with packed lunches and busy schedules, but with healthy habits that help you thrive alongside the people you love.

Wishing you and your family a healthy, happy, and successful school year!

Stop Selling—Start Storytelling

People don't just buy products or services—they buy the story behind them.

This month, instead of posting "I sell candles" or "I own a bakery," tell your audience why you started your business.

Share:

  • What inspired you to begin.

  • The problem you're passionate about solving.

  • A meaningful client success story.

  • A lesson you've learned along the way.

Authentic stories create trust, and trust builds loyal customers.

💡This Month's Challenge

Post one photo and share the story behind your business. Invite your audience to tell you why they support local businesses—you might be surprised by the connections you make!

Remember: People may forget what you sell, but they'll remember how your story made them feel.

Our very first She Rises Collective Leadership Team meeting marked the beginning of an exciting journey. Member Spotlight

Sometimes the hardest decisions are the ones that make room for our true calling.

Last Friday, Darlene Gurule made the difficult decision to step away from her role in pregnancy center ministry so she could fully dedicate her time and heart to Eden's Herbs Apothecary. While it wasn't an easy choice, she knew she couldn't continue giving her best to two full-time callings. This new chapter allows her to focus on serving women in a deeper, more intentional way.

At Eden's Herbs Apothecary, Darlene works holistically with women to create personalized wellness plans that support healing from the inside out. Through customized herbal protocols, handcrafted herbal wellness boxes, and individualized guidance, she helps women restore balance in their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. She is especially passionate about helping women process emotional trauma and embrace a path toward lasting wellness using natural, holistic approaches.

As a mother of five incredible children on the autism spectrum—and as someone who is neurodivergent herself—Darlene brings both professional knowledge and lived experience to the families she serves. She specializes in coaching and supporting the neurodivergent community, offering compassionate guidance, practical tools, and personalized strategies that empower individuals and families to thrive.

Darlene believes healing is never one-size-fits-all. Her mission is to walk alongside every client with compassion, education, and individualized care, helping them discover hope, healing, and renewed purpose.

"When we step into our purpose, we create space for others to heal, grow, and thrive."🌿
